SSH

The following information is about connecting to university servers with SSH Secure Shell for Windows or Mac OS X SSH. SSH allows users to connect securely to a server such as Comp or Cavern.

SSH Secure Shell for Windows

Installation

  1. Download SSH Secure Shell (available to students, faculty and staff; log in with your UARK username and password).

  2. Double-click on the sshwinsecureshell-3.2.9 icon in the location where the file was saved. If you have an older version of SSH installed, you will be asked if you want to upgrade. Click OK.

  3. Read the License Agreement, and click Yes.

  4. Click Next through the Location, Program Folder, Select Components and Check Setup dialog boxes. Two applications will be available after installation, SSH Secure Shell Client and SSH Secure File Transfer Client.

Logging In

  1. Open the SSH Secure Shell or Secure File Transfer Client, and press the Enter key.

  2. Enter the server location; for example, comp.uark.edu or cavern.uark.edu.

  3. Enter your UARK username. Leave the port number at the default and the Authentication Method set to Profile Settings.

  4. Click through any messages from the server such as "Welcome" boxes. Enter your UARK password. Click OK

  5. In the second Enter Authentication Response dialog box, click OK. The first time you use either SSH Secure Shell or SSH Secure File Transfer to connect to a specific server, you will see the Host Identification dialog box. Click Yes.

Note: After logging in, click New File Transfer Window from Secure Shell to open Secure File Transfer, or click New Terminal Window from Secure File Transfer to open Secure Shell.

Mac OS X SSH

  1. Open the Go menu and click Applications.

  2. Open the Utilities folder and double-click Terminal.

  3. At the prompt, type ssh username@server.uark.edu (e.g., ssh jdoe@comp.uark.edu).

  4. Press the Enter key, type your password when prompted, and press Enter again to log in.

  5. When finished with your session, please remember to log out (type exit at the prompt) and quit the application.
