SSH

Connect to university servers with PuTTY for Windows or Mac OS X SSH. SSH allows users to connect securely to a remote server.

PuTTY SSH for Windows

Note: PuTTY is recommended for Windows users, but limited technical support is available. See the PuTTY documentation or contact your instructor for assistance.

Installation

  1. Download PuTTY by choosing the Windows MSI installer package.

  2. Double-click on the putty-0.nn-installer.msi icon in the location where the file was saved.

  3. Click Next through the Destination Folder and Product Features dialog boxes. Click Install. A PuTTY icon will appear on your desktop.

Logging In

  1. Open PuTTY.

  2. Enter the host name or IP address of the server; for example, comp.uark.edu or cavern.uark.edu. Leave the port number as the default and the connection type as SSH.

  3. Click Open. The first time you connect to a server, you will be prompted to trust the server's host key. Click Yes.

  4. Enter your UARK username and press the Enter key.

  5. Enter your password and press the Enter key.

Mac OS X SSH

  1. Open the Go menu, and click Applications.

  2. Open the Utilities folder, and double-click Terminal.

  3. At the prompt, type ssh username@server.uark.edu (e.g., ssh jdoe@comp.uark.edu).

  4. Press the Enter key, type your password when prompted, and press Enter again to log in.

  5. When finished with your session, please remember to log out (type exit at the prompt), and quit the application.
