Kaltura: The Basics

Kaltura is used for uploading and managing video content, creating multimedia presentations, and interacting with students. Video content can be created and managed using Kaltura within a Blackboard Learn course.

Get Started with Kaltura

  1. Access Kaltura by logging in at learn.uark.edu with your UARK username and password.

  2. Open your course.

  3. Go to the content area where you want to add or create video, click the down arrow, and select Edit.

  4. In the text editor, click the chevron icon at the top right.

  5. From the Mashups drop-down menu, select Kaltura Media.

Create a Webcam Recording

  1. Click Add New, and select Webcam Recording.
    Note: Click Allow if prompted for a Flash plug-in.

  2. Start recording by clicking anywhere in the video area. Click again to stop recording.

  3. Click Save. Enter a title, description and tags for the video.

  4. Click Save. Click Back to Browse and Embed.

  5. Click Select to choose your video. Click Submit.

Create a Screen Capture Recording

  1. Click Add New, and select Screen Recording. Click Launch the screen recorder. 
    Note: Click Allow if prompted to allow a Java plug-in. Click Run if prompted to run the Screen Recorder application.  

  2. Click and drag to resize the frame around the area of your screen that you will record.

  3. Select your microphone. You can also select a webcam if you are including video of yourself.

  4. Start the screen capture by clicking the red Record button. To pause recording, click the blue Pause button. 

  5. To finish recording, click the Done button. 

  6. Click Upload. Click Close. 

  7. Enter a title, description and tags for the screen capture. 

  8. Click Save. Click Back to Browse and Embed.

  9. Click Select to choose your video. Click Submit.

Upload an Existing Video

  1. Click Add New, and select Media Upload.

  2. Click Browse or Choose file and select the video file. Click Open.

  3. Enter a title and description for the video. 

  4. Click Save. Click Back to Browse and Embed. 

  5. Click Select to choose your video. Click Submit.

  6. Click Next. Review the settings, and click Submit.

  7. Click Submit to save the changes to the content area.

    I keep getting "the applet is failed to start" when I try to record my screen.
    .
    I have installed the latest version of Java.

    We are working with Kaltura to try to get this issue fixed. While intermittent, it is frustrating. If the applet continues to fail we recommend using Quicktime or VLC Media Player to record your screen. Please give us call and we'll look into all the options with you!
