UARK Gmail: Mobile Setup

WAIT: Make sure you are connected to a secure Wi-Fi network before beginning UARK Gmail setup.

IT Services supports a number of mobile devices including iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows Phone. Limited support is available for Androids due to the variety of operating systems available for these devices. IT Services does not support Blackberry.

iPhone and iPad Setup

Recent versions of iOS for iPhone and iPad no longer require the Mobile/IMAP password for UARK Gmail. Instructions for older iOS versions that do require a Mobile/IMAP password are available below.

  1. Open Settings. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

  2. Tap Add Account. Tap Google.

  3. Enter your UARK Gmail address (username@email.uark.edu). If there is a password field, leave it blank. Tap Next.

  4. In the UARK Central Login window, enter your UARK username and password.

  5. Tap Accept. Tap Next.

  6. Select the services you wish to use. Tap Save.

iOS 8.1.2 and Earlier

WAIT: Make sure you've set your Mobile/IMAP password for UARK Gmail in Password Manager.

  1. Open Settings. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

  2. Tap Add Account. Tap Google.

  3. Enter your full name. In the Email field, enter your UARK Gmail address (username@email.uark.edu).

  4. In the Password field, enter your Mobile/IMAP password for UARK Gmail.

  5. Tap Next. Tap Save.

Troubleshooting Note

If you get an error during the setup process, follow the steps below to make sure IMAP is enabled for your UARK Gmail mailbox.

  1. Log into email.uark.edu with your UARK username and password.

  2. Click the Settings icon in the upper right and select Mail settings.

  3. Click Forwarding and Pop/IMAP.

  4. Click Enable IMAP. Click Save Changes.

  5. Repeat the setup instructions.

Android Setup

WAIT: Make sure you've set your Mobile/IMAP password for UARK Gmail in Password Manager.

  1. From the Applications menu, tap the Email application.

  2. On the Your accounts page, tap Next.

  3. Enter your UARK Gmail address (username@email.uark.edu).

  4. Enter your Mobile/IMAP password for UARK Gmail. Tap Next.

  5. Enter a nickname for your mailbox and set the name to be displayed in your outgoing messages. Tap Done.

To verify your settings from the Inbox view, tap Menu and Account Settings.

  • Incoming settings
    IMAP server: imap.gmail.com
    Port: 993
    Security type: SSL (always)

  • Outgoing settings
    SMTP server: smtp.gmail.com
    Port: 465
    Security type: SSL (always)

Troubleshooting Note

If you get an error during the setup process, follow the steps below to make sure IMAP is enabled for your UARK Gmail mailbox.

  1. Log into email.uark.edu with your UARK username and password.

  2. Click the Settings icon in the upper right and select Mail settings.

  3. Click Forwarding and Pop/IMAP.

  4. Click Enable IMAP. Click Save Changes.

  5. Repeat the setup instructions.

Windows Phone Setup

Windows Phone versions 8.1 and later no longer require the Mobile/IMAP password for UARK Gmail. Instructions for Windows Phone 7 are also available below.

  1. On Start, flick left to the App list and tap Settings. Tap Email + accounts.

  2. Tap Add an account. Tap Google.

  3. Tap the Email address box and enter your UARK Gmail address (username@email.uark.edu). Tap Next.

  4. In the UARK Central Login window, enter your UARK username and password. Tap Sign in.

Your UARK Gmail messages and contacts will be synced to your phone.

Windows Phone 7 and Earlier

WAIT: Make sure you've set your Mobile/IMAP password for UARK Gmail in Password Manager.

  1. On Start, flick left to the App list and tap Settings. Tap Email + accounts.

  2. Tap Add an account. Tap Google.

  3. Tap the Email address box and enter your UARK Gmail address (username@email.uark.edu).

  4. Tap the Password box and enter your Mobile/IMAP password for UARK Gmail. Tap Sign In.

Your UARK Gmail messages and contacts will be synced to your phone.

    I have been unable to access my UARK gmail on my android phone. When I attempt to update the password in my incoming settings, I get a message saying "couldn't open connection to server" and cannot continue my set up. Please help! Thank you

      Katelyn, make sure you are using your Mobile/IMAP Gmail password when setting up your email app. Instructions for changing your Mobile/IMAP password are available at its.uark.edu/email/student-mobile/index.php.     I'm having the same problem as Katelyn and I've checked everything and can't find anything wrong. I've taken it to the IT help desk in the union twice and they can't figure it out either. Most of the time (but not all) I can receive emails but if I try to send one it gets qued in my outbox.

      Rebecca, I'm sorry to hear you're having issues using UARK Gmail on your mobile device. Make sure you have enabled IMAP on your UARK Gmail settings...
      1. Log into email.uark.edu with your UARK username and password.
      2. Click the Settings icon in the upper right and select Mail settings.
      3. Click Forwarding and Pop/IMAP.
      4. Click Enable IMAP. Click Save Changes.
      If this does not resolve the problem, please report your issue at askit.uark.edu with details like the device you are using, the app you are using, etc. A technical support expert will be able to work with you and try to determine the cause of the problem.

    I've never had any problems connecting my student email account to my phone until recently. I got new Samsung phone and I've triple checked everything and It still gives me an error message that it cannot connect to server. It's no longer compatible with some other setting.
