Network: IP Addresses

An IP address is an identifier for a computer or device on a TCP/IP network. Networks using the TCP/IP protocol route messages based on the IP address of the destination. The format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods. An example on campus would be 130.184.12.132. Your computer must be online to obtain an IP address.

Find Your IP Address

Windows

  1. Log into Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7.

  2. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt.

  3. At the C: prompt type ipconfig  /all and press Enter. There must be a space before /all.

Mac OS X

  1. Open the System Preferences from the Apple Menu or the Dock.

  2. Click the Network icon.

  3. Select your network connection from the list on the left.

  4. The IP address will be displayed in the window on the right.

Reset Your IP Address

If you cannot obtain an IP address from wireless or wired connections on campus using Windows 7, try resetting your IP address.

Enter "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" from an administrator command prompt, then enter "netsh winsock reset catalog."

Hi! I noticed the new feature that tells me what IP address last logged in to my email. I also noticed upon logging in recently that an IP address popped up that I know for a fact could not have been me but when I tried to search for this info, which fades away off the screen within seconds and again the next time I logged in, it was nowhere to be found after I had logged in again from my familiar IP. Is there a way to find a list of these IP addresses that have logged into my email?? Based on the detail from the IP used, I am fairly sure I know who it is, but want to be sure before I address the situation therefore am not changing my password yet. If there is a way to find this info, please let me know!
