emPower: System Access and Scanning and Indexing Software

emPower is a campus-wide, licensed document management system used for securely storing and retrieving any type of electronic document. The following article discusses system access and software for emPower. For information on user ID and licensing, see the main emPower page.

System Access

There are two ways to access emPower.  The web-based version of emPower is available at netfyi.uark.edu. Internet Explorer is currently the only emPower certified browser, but other browsers can be used with some minor issues.

A locally installed software version, specific to a user's computer, is also available.  The local software, available for Windows only, offers better functionality for working with large volumes of files and complex workflows, batch scanning and indexing, and bulk loading of documents. Use AskIT, selecting the category emPower, to request this version of emPower.

The next release of emPower will be Windows 7 certified. The current version of the enterprise software (not certified) works in the Windows 7 environment, but the installation must be completed using a User ID with full admin rights. The computer must then be rebooted, using the same User ID, for the first login.

Scanning and Indexing Software

Any scanned image from any scanner can be loaded manually into emPower.

For batch scanning or indexing the Scan/Index Module, one of two software packages supported by the emPower team, is available for Windows users.  The Scan/Index Module works with most USB and SCSI scanners, although some SCSI scanner manufacturers have not yet released the necessary SCSI drivers for Windows 7.  SCSI scanners are faster for bulk loading and indexing. The Scan/Index Module can also be used to bulk index images and documents that have been created outside the module.

The second software package supported by the emPower team is Kofax, a licensed product that must be purchased.  In addition to bulk scanning and indexing, Kofax has character recognition capabilities that extract data from typed or hand-written text, check boxes, and bar codes.  Like the Scan/Index Module, Kofax works with most USB and SCSI scanners, although some SCSI scanner manufacturers have not yet released the necessary SCSI drivers for Windows 7.

Fulbright College Student Affairs is currently using the Fujitsu FI-6110 ADF Document scanner successfully with Kofax 9 on Windows 7 via USB connection. This is a most recent addition and we're still testing for caveats but so far the experience has been positive and functional to meeting the document scanning needs.
